After Mills Canyon we wanted to try and go into some higher elevations in the national forest in hopes of seeing some fall colors. As we researched where to go we were finding that many of the national forest campgrounds were closed or about to close for the season. We did find a beautiful campground in the Carson National Forest, Hopewell Lake, at an elevation of 9500 feet. It was very cool and windy when we arrived and rain came in during the night. We shared the campground with a herd of cows and a friendly dog named Charlie that belonged to the only other campers in our loop of the campground. We were rewarded with beautiful views of mountains, colorful aspens quaking in the breeze, golden grasses, and an amazing sunset. David even took a short hike on the Continental Divide Trail!
