On our journey up to Maine we have been taking many sections of the Northeast Backcountry Discovery Route, aka the BDR. It takes us on wonderful backroads some of which are paved and others that are dirt one or two tracks. Many take us by out of the way little places of historical interest or that quaint general store that is very common up here and hard to pass by without stopping. Our next segment of the journey took us on Sandwich Notch road, an historical road dating to 1801.

In its heyday it was a major transportation corridor through 2 notches and supported 30 to 40 families. Evidence of stone walls built by these hardscrabble people are still evident today. There is only one home left on the Notch Road today.

We continued on the BDR and soon discovered some other “treats.”

What a neat place that is up there. Just peaceful and quiet I would imagine.
