The ever beautiful Teton Mountains
The last night at Fremont Lake we do a little wildlife watching and explore the campground.

The next morning we find ourselves bouncing along the heavily traveled dirt road to the Death Canyon Trial. At midmorning it is already crowded with parked cars and hikers making their way to and from their vehicles. We arrive at the trailhead and take off up the trail. The day is cool and bright and we are going to a point at about one mile up towards Death Canyon that offers a stunning viewpoint of the glacially carved Phelps Lake. We were not disappointed.

Lunch Tree Hill is named for the picnic spot that John D. Rockefeller Jr. frequented on his 1926 Yellowstone vacation. This gorgeous valley view inspired him to stop the “tawdry” commercial signs that blocked the views and provide unrestricted public access to this inspirational place. Beginning that year he ultimately bought up 32,000 acres to be combined with the Jackson Hole National Monument in 1950 to create this awesome National Park. Traveling along the John D. Rockefeller Jr. Memorial Parkway which connects the Grand Tetons National Park to Yellowstone National Park we are excited to link up with Jason, Lindy, Niko, Avi, and Bryce at the Lewis Lake Campground.

I clearly remember that “road” going in towards the Phelps Lake trailhead. It was rough and it seemed like it took a long time to get to the trailhead. We kept passing up spots as the cars and trucks were lined up and down and thought for sure once we got close that we would have to turn back and go back to one of the empty spots. But we got lucky and found a spot close enough to the trailhead. And it was a very nice 2 mile round trip hike for sure!
