North to New York (Part 1)

Our first night on the way to New York to celebrate Vinny’s Birthday was spent at Nickell Branch Recreation Area on Barkley Lake located in the Land Between the Lakes. It was a super moon evening which made for great river traffic watching as the boats headed in and out of the Barkley Locks. It is amazing to see the tugs (why are they not called pushers?) as they moved tremendous barges up and down the Cumberland river. After their passage the wakes they generated made smooth even waves that crashed ashore on the river banks below our campsite.

One of the many tugs we watched moving huge barges along the lake.

We had first stopped and eaten at Patti’s 1880 Settlement Restaurant and had a great meal.

At the campground we were greeted by an explosion of fall colors;

That evening we were struck by a freak thunderstorm which made us hustle to get all the camping gear stowed in the K2R2 before it hit suddenly with lightning, wind gusts, rain and pea sized hail. So much for sleeping under the stars!

After the excitement we had to retired early because we had a 6 am departure for a bourbon tour scheduled the next day at Bardstown Distillery.

Good night super moon!

  1. That moon looked like the sun was coming up it was so bright orange. I’ve never seen one of these before where the moon was so orange
