Kiptopeke State Park

We landed for the night in Cape Charles, Virginia at Kiptopeke State Park on the Chesapeake Bay. We really enjoyed this park a lot. The beach was beautiful and we spent quite a bit of time collecting bags of colorful iridescent shells and hiking the many trails the park had to offer.

One really interesting feature were the “concrete ships” which form a breakwater around the pier. They were made during WWII and actually are concrete since there was a shortage of steel at the time. After the war they were sold and there are 9 located here, they were purchased by the Virginia Ferry Corporation to create a safe breakwater for the ferry pier. Now they serve as a unique artificial reef and a nesting and roosting site for birds.
