Here at the confluence of the Potomac and the Shenandoah Rivers sits a small town that for a while witnessed the crossroads of history flowing powerfully through it’s location. Now, bypassed by modern highways, it is home to the reminder of what we are as a nation. Beginning with the Lewis and Clark expedition’s use of the United States armory and arsenal located here to help outfit The Corps of Discovery Expedition and then tumbling along in the turbulent waters towards the Civil War. On this pivotal point above the two rivers, John Brown, an adamant abolitionist, (minus the beard) seized the arsenal in 1859 in a violent attempt to foment a slave rebellion and was arrested by a contingent of United States Marines led by a young Lieutenant Colonel Robert E. Lee. A few short years later now the General Lee returned to orchestrate the capture of the arsenal that the army of Virginia so desperately needed. After that Harpers Ferry moved into the calmer waters where it finds itself nestled today quaint, proud, and beautiful.
