After our hikes down in the canyon floor we spent the next day hiking around on the top of the rim looking down onto the ancient sites. In 1925 George & Evelyn Frey and their 2 year old son arrived at the top of the rim and made the arduous trek down into the canyon on a steep and narrow path with all their worldly belongings to run a ranch. Mrs. Frey went on to spend the rest of her life in the canyon running the lodge and working for Bandelier National Monument. She even entertained and housed many members of the CCC who built the structures at the monument and she also was surrounded by all the mystery of the Manhattan Project which closed the monument for several years in order to house scientists and military personnel.
