Appomattox Court House developed from a small settlement and became the county seat, its courthouse was built in 1846. It was here on April 9, 1865 that Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant to end the Civil War. Grant and Lee met in the parlor of the McLean home to sign the papers of surrender. Many of the buildings from the 1800’s survived and are beautifully restored.

I’m glad they were able to keep a lot of buildings and things and restored them. Glad it is not lost to time
