On the expert advise of one of our personal family lawyers we swung into Oklahoma from the Texas Panhandle to travel to Woodward, OK to go to Hector’s Mexican restaurant to try the Chile Verde and it didn’t disappoint. Thanks Zach for the recommendation!

On our route there we passed the crumpled remains of a train derailment that had happened earlier this year and we stopped at the Canadian River wagon crossing bridge which many a wagon has used in the past but today is a new pedestrian walkway.

After camping at Boiling Springs State park we headed to Black Mesa State park in the vicinity of the highest point in Oklahoma. Again, we were encouraged to stop in Slapout, OK at a gas station out in the middle of nowhere where we split a generous plate of chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes and gravy, and green beans, it was delicious!

We camped at Black Mesa State Park, a designated dark skies park. David got some amazing pictures of the Milky Way. We had intended to hike to the highest point in Oklahoma but we got a late start on the trail and it became very hot and steep so we wisely turned around after hiking 3 of the 4 1/2 miles to the top as we knew we would have to complete 6 more miles in very hot conditions. We will return and accomplish that feat though!
We ended our swing through Oklahoma by checking out some dinosaur tracks.
