Mountain Lake Lodge

K2R2 is feeling a bit like a mobile home right about now. You know the ones that attract tornados like a magnet? Only this is an attraction for Hurricanes and their spawn. Laura sure appears to be headed right at an intersection point on our path to New York somewhere in the middle of West Virginia. Thursday night near Mount Rodgers, highest point in Virginia, Rebecca checked Mountain Lake Lodge for a Friday and Saturday night stay. It was previously booked solid. According to the NOAA storm track Laura was headed straight for the area so, there was a cancellation! We booked and booked (Cleaver eh?).
Driving up SR 700 AKA Mountain Lake Road it was obvious we were destined to rendezvous with the clouds! At over 4,300’ (1,311 meters Granddaddy!) it will be the highest point for K2R2.
Our day was suddenly overtaken by Baby and Johnny Castle and the extra cheesy and beloved 1986 movie Dirty Dancing. There are plaques at every single key point of every cinematographic climatic scene. To wit, we ate where the Housemans ate, parked where they parked, walked where they walked, played where they played, bird watched where they….. But, I digress.
The food at The Harvest restaurant in the main lodge is excellent and the clients well heeled. At this elevation there is no air conditioning in the buildings only box fans in the rooms (Happy Rebecca!). As seen in the movie there are a plethora of activities: one can zip line in the clouds, shoot trap, horseback ride, hike, play games in the arcade, mountain bike ride, swim, or stroll the grounds with Groupies.
This will be not be the last time K2R2 will get a well-deserved respite.

The movie Dirty Dancing was filmed here in the 80’s

An early anniversary gift to ourselves!
I don’t think we’ll try to recreate this, but I wish we had brought a watermelon!

  1. Never seen the Dirty Dancing movie and never plan on seeing it. I like movies from the 1930’s, 1940’s and 1950’s. We are about to go out for awhile until the heat overtakes us
