Tub Run Road

We had the time of our lives….but it was time to move on (those that know the movie will get the reference) Our drive today took us through the rolling hills of Virginia and into West Virginia. The highlight of the day and perhaps my favorite morning so far was Tub Run Road through the Jefferson National Forest. It was a narrow 2-track snakey road through some beautiful woods and some mud puddles. The road was made for K2R2. The Kevlar coating lived up to its name as we had many scrapes of branches and at the end of the road K2R2 was proudly sporting its share of mud. We came upon some very friendly folks who had hunting dogs in the back of their trucks. We stopped to talk and found out they were training the dogs to hunt bears!! They told us all about it, right now and through the fall they practice getting on the trail of a bear and getting it treed which they are allowed to do. The hunting season is in December. They had already treed one bear that morning and while we were talking they got a radio message that their other group was on the trail of another bear. Turns out they were 3 generations of family out that morning. We asked to take a picture of their dogs and they said sure. There were 4 trucks and they each had 3 to 5 dogs in a truck. We passed by their other group shortly their after and sure enough the dogs were all out of the trucks, we stopped to listen and we could hear them baying and howling down the mountain. For the life of me I don’t know how they get them to come back! I was then keen on spotting a bear but alas I did not.

David had aired down the tires for Tub Run Road so afterwards we stopped by a pleasant stream and had a snack and he aired back up. The afternoon we spent on a winding 2 lane paved road with various interesting sites along the way. There were a lot of fishing “runs” along the creeks, must be a popular area for trout fishing. We entered West Virginia and headed towards our campsite for the night on the Potomac River. After a delicious supper of tomato/cucumber salad, roasted corn, roasted okra, and grilled chicken we were ready to call it a day.
