There was 476 miles to cover today and we got an early start. Our first stop for the day was at the J. L. Hubbell Trading Post National Historic Site. The trading post located in Ganado, NM is one of the few remaining trading posts left in the Southwest. Hubbell’s had been in continuous operation since it was first opened in 1878 and still serves the Navajo community in the Ganado area to this day. There were fabulous Navajo rugs, hand carved Kachina Dolls, hand woven baskets, native made exquisite jewelry, and a store full of sundry goods.

Just outside Page, AZ we got out to stretch our legs at the Glen Canyon Dam Overlook on the west side of town along the Colorado River. The overlook is located about one-half mile off US Highway 89 just before it very dramatically crosses a 1.300′ chasm carved out of the porous Navajo Sandstone by the Colorado river on the Glen Canyon Dam Bridge. This beautiful suspension bridge crosses the river just barely 1,000′ feet away the dam making driving across the bridge a breathtaking adventure.

Setting up camp in Kodachrome Basin State Park we had reached the apogee of our western adventure. Everyone was giddy with anticipation of our visit to Bryce National Park the next morning!
