Ricky, Lucy, Fred and Ethel way out west (Part 4)

Sunrise came early to the canyon and we were ready for our hike to the Lighthouse before the sun made the trail intolerably hot. Fred and I made the hike up to the Lighthouse’s pedestal while Lucy and Ethel waited below.

Our goal for the hike

When we got back to our respective campers a light rain sent us inside for a quick rest period before we went to the Trading Post for their “World Famous Hamburgers”. An early bedtime was necessitated because of our early departure planned for the next morning.

The sun’s early morning light beautifully illuminated the CCC visitor center on the canyon rim.

Back on the road we had over 400 miles ahead of us today. The stops along the way were quick and few in order to make camp before too late that evening.

The Casita and the K2R2 let their humans take a break in Tucumcari, NM.
Getting our Kicks!

Along the way we refueled at Bowlin’s Flying C Ranch where we all had a Blizzard at the indoor DQ. Later we stopped at El Mapais National Monument, home to a badlands of 5 overlapping lava flows that are among the youngest on the continent. We finally arrived at Bluewater Lake State Park where we were greeted by their famous wild horses but no humans. A note posted at the check-in kiosk informed us that Fred and Lucy’s site #15 had been moved to another site but did not say where the new site was located. Then Ricky and Ethel moved out in the K2R2 to check out the situation. When they found site #15 it was roped off for repairs. To make matters much worse someone was already in their site and setup! After many loops around this loopy park Fred and Lucy finally found a sign indicating where #15 was now located. It turns out it was designated to be the host site at the front of the loop next to the locked bathrooms. We decided that we did not like this park at all. We decided that we would both set up in the same site. We later found out the park was closing for the season the day we left which may have explained the situation until we looked up in the sky above our site.

Little Man blamed the Chinese Spy Balloon.
Behold, the new site #15!
Our campground hosts saying “goodbye” the next morning.

It felt good to dump at the dump station and put this place “behind” us! Luckily tomorrow is another day!
