Part 4: You dropped a bomb on me.

We stopped in Boise, Oklahoma just before we reached Black Mesa State Park. Here on the night of 5th July 1943 a B-17 crew flying out of Dalhart Army Air Force Base on a night time bombing mission mistook the lights of the City of Boise, Oklahoma for the bombing range target at Conlen, Texas (45 miles off course) unleashing 30 minutes of terror on the sleeping town with bombs striking a Baptist church, a garage and almost scoring a direct hit on a fuel truck. After choosing being sent directly to the front vs facing a court-martial the crew of the B-17 went on to become one of the most decorated of the Second World War. They were chosen to lead 800 aircraft from the 8th Air Force during the first daylight air raid over Berlin in March 1944.

  1. This is where we were also approached by a strange lady asking if needed help. We believe she was actually a wandering vagrant looking for money (or perhaps to lead us somewhere to be harmed)
