Birding From Big Bend to the Badlands

The last couple of months we have traveled from the West Texas/Big Bend area to the Texas Gulf Coast then north through Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, and North Dakota. It seems the Spring migration of birds followed us all along the way. We kept a count of the different species of birds we saw and it was over 140! Some were new sightings for us, others were familiar favorites, and some were ones we don’t see as often as we were in a different part of the country than our usual stomping grounds. Spring had not quite come forth up North so seeing the colorful birds was a treat.

The colorful green jay
The brilliant Scarlett Tanager
Roseate Spoonbill
Snowy Egret
Curved bill thrasher
Wilson’s Warbler
A mountain bluebird adds a touch of color on a dreary day.
A Rock Wren doing deep knee bends in the Badlands.
Western Meadowlark calling to us
Shorebird migrating a long way from home
Sharp tailed grouse
Red breasted nuthatch
Lark sparrow
Lark Bunting
Tree Swallow
Field Sparrow singing a morning song

  1. Great bird pictures. The green jay looks almost like an exotic bird from the jungles. Pretty good catch on the swallow where you could see the bird in the box at the hole
