Part 11: Trout fishing in the Backcountry

The men folk set out early the next morning on a two mile hike in the wilderness to Cascade Lake. On the way we were delayed by a bison jam.

This bad boy is getting out the Christmas decorations early!

We had a day of fishing and a picnic on the shores of the ever beautiful Cascade Lake. The trail follows Cascade Creek flowing west to where it empties into the lake of the same name. We only saw two other hikers in the distance on the way to the lake.

The boys on the trail in the vastness of the wilderness.

We rigged up the fishing poles when we got to the lake and in a short while had caught 3 fish.

Some sort of fishing creature?
Even the mountain man caught one.

The insects were relentless even with bug spray slathered on us. Soon we retired the shade of a large tree to have lunch.

Leftover pizza and burgers! (Notice the Bison rubs on the trees behind everyone.)

Returning to Lewis L ake campground we meet up with the girls who have been exploring Lewis Falls and shopping at Old Faithful. We all decide to get in Lewis Lake down at the boat launch. The water temperature is around 40 degrees so we don’t stay in too long.

And deep too!
Avi takes the plunge!
Niko allowing the sun to raise his core temperature back to normal.
Bryce snuggles with her mother.

Then we return to the campsite where we have yummy dinner of Irish Stew before sitting around the campfire prior to bedtime.

  1. After reading this book called Death in Yellowstone” one might think twice before hiking out in the wilderness or getting into a glacial lake or even sleeping in a tent in a crowded campground. Anyway, to be in Yellowstone in mid July was such a break from the heat and humidity of Bartlett for sure!
