Route to Devil’s Tombstone Campground

The next morning our winding BDR route took us past several covered bridges on our way to the quaint hamlet of Fleischmanns, NY.

The fourth commandment was in full evidence when we arrived in Fleischmanns as the Hasidic faithful were walking about town after their worship services. Several of the men with children in tow stopped to talk to me about the K2R2. They showed a surprising amount of interest and were full of questions about its amenities.

We stopped in Fleischmanns to eat at Bebert’s Condiments Cafe and Gallery which stands in jarring juxtaposition to this backdrop of the pietist Jews. The 8 vegetable couscous and split pea soup served with pita and a piping hot cappuccino were remarkable. We ate in the courtyard next to a couple and their two children who lived in Brooklyn. We talked about literature with their college bound son.

Driving on towards Devil’s Tombstone Campground a stop at Kaaterskill falls was on the list, a beautiful sight that attracts hordes of tourists but worth battling the crowds.
