Palo Duro State Park

We headed to Palo Duro with the intention to camp for a couple of nights but it was just too hot so again we got a hotel room in Canyon, TX. We had tickets to see the Texas Outdoor Musical, something we’ve been wanting to do. We did get up early 2 mornings in order to be able to do a couple of hikes. In fact, park personnel were closing some of the trails at 11:00 AM each day because of the extreme heat. The first morning we took a portion of the Givens, Spicer, Lowry Trail. We started at 8:30, hiked in for 1.5 miles then came back for a total of 3 miles. We hoofed it on that one making it in about an hour.

I love nature’s color palette here!

The next morning we arrived at 7:30 to begin our hike so we could walk at a little more leisurely pace. We took the Rock Garden Trail which was a lot steeper than the previous day’s. The trail took us from the canyon floor up onto the rim. We had some cloud cover at the beginning of the trail too which helped. We again did a little over 3 miles making it in about 1 hour 45 minutes.

Our last evening we attended the Texas Outdoor Musical in the amphitheater set against the backdrop of the canyon. It was an outstanding show with wonderful dancers, singers, and special lighting effects on the canyon walls telling the story of the Texas Panhandle.

Its’s early morning now and we are making our way to Lindy’s, then Leah’s, on to Arkansas & Tennessee to see everyone there, and then on to New York!

  1. Well, it looks a lot hotter and drier there in Palo Duro. But I am glad you all had a good long trip and got to see a lot of different things..
