Journeys With Tom: Seminole Canyon and The Gage Hotel

Tom arrived at Lindy and Jason’s mid morning and we embarked on our great desert adventure to the Big Bend area of west Texas. Of course the first stop involved food. The intersection of Texas 41 and US 83 is the home of the Garven Store which is the self proclaimed oldest convenience store in Tejas. So, we conveniently purchased some jerky, a brisket sandwich and a sausage wrap that were consumed under the watchful gaze of the store peacock.

The second stop in Comstock was for, you guessed it, food where we pulled into the J and P Bar n Grill for a late lunch of burgers, onion rings, and a wonderfully spicy margarita and two beers.

Arriving at Seminole Canyon State Park we planned the attack for the next day while consuming fashionable adult beverages. The next morning after breakfast Tom and I made a late start for Panther Cave on the Rio Grande River. We saw feral hogs rooting along the muddy banks of the river, several blossoming Texas Claret Cup cacti, and the famous red leaping panther. We were booked the next morning for a docent led hike down to the spectacular pictographs of the Fate Bell Shelter before we left for Marathon and our stay at the fabulous Gage hotel and spa.

After a drink at the White Buffalo Bar we had an appointment with culinary destiny; the Twelve Gage Restaurant and a good night’s sleep before the push to Big Bend State Park.
