Our last trip to Caprock Canyon State Park was 6 years ago in the middle of a snow storm and all the park roads and hiking trails were closed. This time we got to explore and hike the park although we did have several days where blue northers blew in and kept us inside the van and out of the panhandle wind!
The park is home to the state buffalo herd. We found out by talking to the rangers that there are about 275 bison in the park. They are allowed to roam free and roam they do right into the campground and by your camper! It was a treat to get to see them so up close and personal but from the safety of the van.
The canyon is impressive and quite colorful with its red hues and contrasting green vegetation. We enjoyed our hikes down to the canyon floor and high up onto the Llano Estacado as well.
