Six Month Anniversary!

It has been six months that we have been rolling in the K2R2 and a question we are often asked is: “Do you miss the Krazy K Ranch?” For us the reply is punctuated by a long pensive pause as we stare off into space and ponder. In truth, the Krazy K Ranch was a special place full of life, memories, and love. It would be hard to not miss a place that the entire family and friends loved so much. As it turns out the Krazy K Ranch is a special place of the heart and soul that one often returns to savor in their minds. The “K” is a place where the beauty of the nostalgic past manifests itself in the memories of the many good times everyone experienced over the 17 years that the Boss Lady© and her trusty foreman called it home.
But let’s return to that question of missing the Krazy K Ranch. It is far easier to answer the question by replying first about what we don’t miss about the Krazy K Ranch. It would not be fair to answer for the Boss Lady© but as for the Foreman, here’s a short list:
CHORES, not limited to but including the following:
Fence mending. After every windy day or passing storm you have to drive over a mile of perimeter fencing to look for downed trees and branches (It always falls on an a fence support brace or a gate);
Checking the 50+ batteries for charging or replacement;
Keeping gas fresh in 12 engines;
Checking and maintaining the correct pressures of over 40 tires;
Cleaning the road of garbage thrown out by the savages;
Taking care of “dumped” animals;
Waging an ongoing range war with feral hogs;
Fighting erosion;
Monthly monitoring of 2 irrigation wells;
But, what the Foreman misses most is being able to hop off the Gator, Polaris, golf cart, or four wheeler and squeeze off a few practice rounds, riding across the upper lake on the zip line screaming at the top of his lungs with a beer in one hand, photographing migratory birds while sitting on the back porch with the Boss Lady© during the spring migration, entertaining 100-200+ people at the pavilion for a Pig Roast, Crawfish boil, wedding or birthday party. He really misses living with 4 lovable labs.
The Boss Lady© misses the sounds of the wind whistling through the trees, watching and feeding the birds throughout the seasons, the yapping of the coyotes raising their young in their den just across the northern fence line, the flashing of the lightning bugs in the woods around the house, cooking supper in the Dutch oven after a fall burn, the sudden pulse of a bass striking your lure as you watched it moving through the crystal clear waters of the lakes, BUT most of all the happy smiles of those we love that shared that magical place!

  1. Well said!! Slight tear to the eye.

    But I would say at least we all get to still see each other enjoy our smiles and experience the mobile version of the K life!

    Can’t wait for KKRR to roll back North, if we can manage to stay up late enough we might hear some coyotes to north of us here.

    Explore on Boss Lady and Foreman ????

  2. “it was magical” is an understatement. When I would come back from a vacation down there, the people at Morgan Keegan would always ask why I went there so many times on my vacation. I could not explain it to them. I would simply say “you would have to go there to experience it for yourself” But it was inevitable that you would have to leave. So called “progress” would be the K’s demise. But it was a heck of a run I would say!!

  3. We made many annual treks to spend summer vacation get-aways at the Krazy K. I believe we may have actually been the first guests and The Krazy K wasn’t officially the name yet. If I recall correctly, Sun and Shadows may have initially been under consideration but it was thought that sounded more like the name for a nudist camp. Copperheads, coral snakes, scorpions, and other biting and stinging creatures do, however, live among the rocks and in the shadows of the trees under the brutal Texas summer sun, but …… I guess that name just didn’t reflect the essence of what the place was to become. The Krazy K ultimately became the name and it was very befitting for a Texas ranch and the experiences many would have there.

    After the LGD from Tennessee, I was often greeted with a cold libation from the kegerator which was always refreshing and greatly appreciated. Arriving at the Krazy K felt like we were coming to a resort of sorts as we all found gift baskets on our beds. The love, hospitality, generosity, food, and fun we all had is something I’ll always remember about the Krazy K. The experiences are too numerous to describe, but fishing in the early morning before the heat of the day had set in stands out. The sun glistening on the water and the quietness of the early morning was a relaxing way to start the day. Lots of fish were caught from the lakes and brought back here where blackened bass was always a special treat we were fortunate to enjoy.

    Firearms training and shooting, swimming with the dogs, riding around on the 4-wheeler and other vehicles from the Krazy K motor pool, trying our luck on the slot machine, and playing pool were other activities we enjoyed on our visits. Sitting out on the deck with a morning cup of coffee watching the bird activity was an enjoyable way to spend an early summer morning before it got too hot. There were also excursions from the Krazy K. Shopping trips to the mall and Academy and Frazier’s Statuary were always included in a visit to the Krazy K as was a night out at Las Fuentes for margaritas and comida Mexicana. And less we forget, going to The Fun Shop and a memorable trip to Splash Town contributed to the overall Krazy K experience.

    Although we can’t make those trips to the Krazy K anymore, we can still go there through the memories and experiences we share with those we love and who made the Krazy K a special place for us all.
